We went outside for this lesson, "Drawing from Nature". Students learned about landscape art, and we talked about the connections between art and science - observation and discovery! Students were given magnifying glasses and encouraged to explore nature and look for details to capture in their drawings. We also talked about different species of trees that grow in our area and how each tree is different from the bark to the leaves. Work by students grades 1-3 at Wexford Elementary:

These students (below) were very creative and used nature as a drawing tool! They rubbed dandelions and red maple leaves on their paper to create color - an exciting discovery. Two of them did leaf rubbings to capture the details of nature.

In this lesson, "Mixed Media and Collage", students were introduced to collage techniques. Recycled paper and Magazines were used to cut out shapes, textures, and images that the students used to create their own unique artwork.

In this lesson, "Combining Real and Imaginary", students were taught how to create depth in a drawing through foreground, middleground and background objects. Students were challenged to draw a still-life from observation, paying attention to which objects are in front and which ones are in the back.

Then, students used their imaginations to complete the drawing - giving it an environment, characters, a setting and a story.

Students were challenged to draw what they see - not what they think they see. In this lesson, we talked about the difference between symbols for objects (tree, sun, house, flower, cloud) and real objects. Students were given a variety of still-life objects to study and draw. They were encouraged to pay attention to details and really look at each object thoroughly. Here are some examples:

lantern lantern figurine candleholder
Dessa, lantern Kyle M, lantern + pitcher + cup Alex R, figurine Radha, candle holder

teeth objects max
Joie, wind-up teeth Kira, objects Max, objects + figurines

Students studied their hands - looking to capture details of wrinkles, nails, and overall form.

These hand drawings are amazing for students of this young age.
